Leadership Recognition

“Leadership in the OCDSB is the demonstration of personal initiative to achieve a positive outcomes"

Our student population is diverse  and multi-lingual.. Many of our students are learning english as a new  language and many of our newcomers to Canada often achieve the standards.  The diversity of our population is an accurate representation of our nation. Student voice is an integral part of our school culture at Bells Corners.  We have a student body called the Buzy Bulldogs that represent our student population and they are responsible for organizing, planning, and implementing a variety of activities throughout the school. Ongoing initiatives that are continually evolving as student feedback is initiated include:

  • Morning Announcements
  • Multilingual Assemblies (eg. Arabic, Urdu…)
  • Student Led Assemblies
  • Fundraising for Social Justice Issues
  • Partnerships with FAMSAC
  • Bulletin Boards Depicting Days of Significance
  • Leadership in extracurricular clubs
  • Milk, lunch and healthy snack monitors
  • Bus Monitors
  • Library Volunteers

Bells Corners has a leadership team of 40 staff members as well as a Principal and a Vice Principal. Staff members are  continually updating their learning to reflect current research and directions in the field of education. This is encouraged and supported by the Annual Learning Plan and participation in Board wide opportunities for professional development. We have various staff members who take on leadership roles within the school and board  (Division Team Leaders, Associate Teachers, Mentoring, Technology Lead, Mathematics Lead, etc...).

Our School Council meets on the second Tuesday of every month throughout the year and is actively engaged in consultation and fundraising activities. They meet to discuss school events, fundraising initiatives for our Kindergarten yard and support curriculum related initiatives.

Community volunteers support in multiple ways such as reading with students, supporting classroom events, and school events.  Volunteers spend hours diligently creating a school skating rink for the winter months. Their ongoing support is valued and appreciated.

Bells Corners backs on to a city of Ottawa greenspace that is shared with our school. Our staff support and provide an active mentoring role to High School Coop students, Algonquin students in the Registered Educational Childcare Educators (RECE)  and Child Youth Care (CYC) programmes. Community outreach is achieved yearly and on an ongoing basis as our school supports the local Bells Corners FAMSAC food drive and is active in preparation and delivery of Food Hampers for our local families.

Our students are all leaders and have the capacity to improve their school everyday.  We deliberately recognize this informally during morning announcements “Shout Outs” citing instances where children have demonstrated good character, independently.   Monthly assemblies are also an opportunity for students to be recognized for academic and character achievement more formally. These assemblies are open to the public and families of award recipients are invited to attend directly.  Also featured each month are presentations created by students to raise awareness of issues at school, in the community or around the globe. Good examples of these topics include Flood Relief, Terry Fox, Orange Shirt Day, The Day of Pink, Enviro-Club, Black History Month etc.
