Hello Parents and students,
At Bells Corners Public School we have a team of dedicated students on our Eco Team this year. We meet twice a week to discuss ways we can keep our planet green and healthy.
This year the eco team is focusing on reducing plastic spoons throughout the classrooms, because they are bad for our environment. Research tells us that it can take up to 1000 years for a single plastic spoon to decompose. So after November 14th there will be no more plastic spoons in the classroom. So don't forget to bring your own spoons.
Our school will be doing litterless lunches starting Friday, November 22nd. Litterless lunches are when all of the packaged foods in our lunches do not get thrown out at school but travel home with students. Recycling will continue as usual.
The goal of Litterless Lunches is to encourage us all to think about the negative and long-lasting impact waste has on our environment. We also want to reduce the amount of garbage our school produces so less money is spent on waste removal and more on valuable learning resources. Many students and at least one classroom in our school are already litterless!
What does this mean for all of us? Beginning this week, garbage cans will not be provided during both nutrition breaks on Fridays. Regular blue bin recycling will continue. Students will be asked to bring any wrappers, food remains and containers home with them in their lunch bags. We are hoping this will help increase awareness of how much waste we produce and instill a desire to help keep our environment healthy. This may be inconvenient and a bit messy but it is the right thing to do.
Many things are overpackaged in our stores and many landfill sites in Ontario communities are already filled to capacity. The Eco Team is committed to exploring ways of reducing waste at BCPS and will be passing on valuable tips to students over the coming weeks. We are happy to join other schools across the country that already have litterless lunches. We thank you for your support!
Should you have any questions or concerns, feel free to contact us at school.
Thanks for helping keep our planet healthy!
Sincerely,
BCPS Eco Team
