January 8, 2020,

Dear Parents/Guardians:

We have been informed that there is a case of Fifth Disease (Parvovirus B19) present in the school.  Fifth Disease usually affects children and, for most people, can be viewed as an unimportant rash illness.  Children with sickle cell or other forms of chronic anemia and pregnant women should consult with the health care provider.

The symptoms of Fifth Disease include: mild fever and distinctive facial rash (giving them a “slapped cheek” appearance), or a red lace-like rash on the rest of the body.  Some people may have severe reactions while others may only demonstrate mild signs of illness.

Please take a moment to visit the Ottawa Public Health Department at

If you notice the symptoms above, please take your child to the doctor to determine whether your child has Fifth Disease.  If there is a positive diagnosis, please notify the school immediately.

Thank you for your assistance in ensuring all our BCPS students and staff remain safe.
