Secure School / Lockdown Procedures

Secure School / Lockdown Procedures

We practice two lockdowns per year and we are accompanied by a police officer on at least one of them.  Preparation for these practices varies by grade.  The general theme of our message is that we prepare for unsafe events such as fires (fire drills), threats outside the school (secure school), threats inside the school (lockdowns) so that we are as safe as possible in unsafe situations.  Teachers make comparisons to similar measures taken on a daily basis at home and in the community that go unnoticed such as locks on doors, handrails on stairs, home smoke detectors, seat belts, bicycle helmets, lifeguards, armed police officers etc.  We strive to provide developmentally appropriate information.  The fact remains that these practices can be unsettling for adults and children alike.  Click here to view a useful website.  The resource is for teachers but may well assist you at home.

In the event that it is necessary to clear the halls, the office will make an announcement repeating the words “Secure School” three times.  Should it be necessary to secure the school against a dangerous intruder, the office will make an announcement repeating the words “Lock Down” three times.  These steps will be followed.

Secure School Procedures:

  • lock all outer doors & reveal signs on windows
  • cover door window & classroom windows and continue teaching
  • take attendance and report only lost or found students to the Office

Outside for a Secure School Procedure:

  • stay outside and move your class to the far end of the soccer field
  • contact office for access to building
  • if threatened, move off property to Christ Church, 3861 Richmond Rd.

Lock Down Procedure:

  • Office staff moves to Principal’s office, locks doors and makes the Announcement, dials 911 and calls the OCDSB Emergency Number
  • students in hallways are to run to the closest classroom
  • students in the washrooms are to stay silent and hide in the washrooms
  • prior to locking your door, do a visual check of the hallway and admit any ‘lost’ students
  • make no calls, move all students away from windows & doorway(s)
  • move to the floor and sit against the wall that adjoins the hall – ‘get small get silent’ – expect armed police in halls - the school is to ‘sound and appear vacant’
  • ignore all announcements, calls and alarms
  • await communication, in person from an official with a key
  • Be prepared to sit for hours & have a plan for toileting IN YOUR ROOM

Outside for a Lock Down:

  • stay there and move your class to the far end of the field out of sight if threatened, move off property to Christ Church, 3861 Richmond Rd.

In the gym for a Lock Down:

  • lock doors (gym & stage) and move to floor by storage room

Questions or concerns, please feel free to call the school.
